Starved Rock State Park is open all year round. It’s has long trails and eighteen canyons, and runs for seven miles along the Illinois River. The popular tourism season is summer. But if you want to see and photograph birds, go to the river and take a boat ride, canoe or kayak along the shore of Plum Island.
Plum Island is a wildlife sanctuary where no visitors are allowed. This nature retreat is teaming with birds throughout the year. You can see them soaring and diving on the river all year round.
In January and February, winter season, is the best time of year for bald eagle watching. The prime time to watch the eagles soar and dive for fish is in the morning, so grab your coffee and camera to go.

I grew up 6 miles from here in LaSalle, Il. At one time there was a cable car type ride you could take to the island as well as a place for a small plane to land.
I wonder why they took it down? Did you try the cable car?
The cable car has been gone for more than 40 years now, but I remember seeing it a couple of times as a kid and have recently seen a photo taken from inside it.
