It was while I was visiting the Oak Park Conservatory that I asked a staff member if they had a rare ghost orchid. She said that they didn’t. Then she told me that there was an orchid show coming up at the DuPage County Fairgrounds and there might be one there.
I thanked her for that insider’s tip. I found the date and time for the Batavia Orchid Society’s orchid show with free admission on fairgrounds website. At the show, I saw orchid varieties in all shapes, sizes, colors and scents. They were orchids that smelled like lime, vanilla and chocolate. I did see the elusive ghost orchid, but it hadn’t bloomed yet.
There are a lot of events for hobbyists and collectors during the year at this place with free admission or cheap ticket price. I’m going to check calendar of events at other county fairgrounds to learn if there are any interesting events that will coincide with a visit to that town or county.
